Back to hobbies ... and Life

Finally got a decent photo of our black pug. He's a beut! He has to think about things alot before dealing with them. He has to sniff and sniff and sniff on a spot and think about what it all means. While the boston terrier would just take a quick sniff and head out looking for things to eat or things to chase. The collar he wears has lots of spikes on it ... just to keep Sheba from chewing on it or using it to pull him around.

Boiled Peanuts

I have this bag of raw shelled peanuts, which my wife's visiting teacher gave to me. She (the VT) works at a peanut processing plant.

Anyway, I had this bright idea yesterday ... I took several handfuls of the peanuts, put them in a sauce pan with water and a couple tablespoons of salt. Boiled them for a little while ... then let them soak overnight. Today I simmered them for a bit to soften them up some.

Absolutely DELICIOUS boil'd p-nuts!!
... without all the messy shells.

Sorry, not foto ... they dun bin et.

Meeting in the Park

We passed this lovely house yesterday on the way to the park. It sits on top of a hill and the view from the 2nd floor balcony is fantastic.

The park has expanded their play equipment area ... so it really attracts a lot of children ... and the occasional oddball parent ... nuff said.

This is Mrs. & Mr. W and a couple of their daughters.

JIM showed up without his BIG blue Great Danes.

Two sisterly types enjoying a brisk outing.

Nothing quite like cousins getting together ...

Unlike Last Year ...

Unlike last year ... when the old stove burned the fruitcakes to a crisp after only 20 minutes at 190 degrees F. -- I threw those burned cakes out on the lawn, took a foto of them, and stomped them in anger and frustration ... before putting them in the trash can.
A LOT of money for ingredients went to waste.

This year in the new stove that our landlord installed to replace the bad one ...
I made 7 of these lovely fruitcakes (Julekage). Delightful and delicious!
Sister Jan even requested one of these!!

Contrasts

My neighbor sent this foto of what his truck looked like this morning in Lowell, Indiana when he woke up. No tire tracks ... just his feet prints in the snow. One of these days he is intending to get the bunk-heater fixed ... In the meantime, he wraps up in lots of layers and a sub-zero sleeping bag.

This morning, I took this picture of town ... it's there in the misty trees ... beyond the peanut and cotton fields. Two fotos, the same morning ... quite a contrast!

Rain Aftermath

Back to rain

They say it is good that we had 2 dry days ... because the river was spreading into the local landscape .... not yet a full-blown valley wide flood ... but darn close.  This afternoon or early tomorrow morning, I'll have to go see how high it is.

Dry Day!!

We had a dry day today. It was short-sleeve t-shirt weather.
We will suffer through this so that you-all don't have to.
:-))

Thought Provoking ...

So, who has the right to send troops to chase down terrorists located in "safe havens" in other countries?

Kind of thought provoking ...

That Time of the Year AGAIN ...

Since the landlord replaced the stove with one that doesn't burn everything to a crisp (that was with the oven set to less than 190F for 15 minutes) ... We can now BAKE!

It's time to attempt making the annual fruitcake ...
No Ahnah I won't make it without nuts.
No I won't make it without the "fruits".

It will be a fruit & nut mix with just enough cake batter
to hold it all together.
ENJOY!!

Corned Beef

I've lived to the age where I have a light gray beard ...
And never until now did I realize that after you remove the bottom off the corned beef can ... and removed the corned beef down to the top of the remaining portion of can ... that the piece of can you removed from the bottom can be used as a lid. Because of the key removing that little strip of metal, the bottom will slide down over the rest of the can as a lid.
Amazing!

Laying down on the job

I thought I'd toss in a foto of me laying down on the job.
No, I haven't ripped, torn, or broken anything ... lately.
Altho I was badly beaten by the derision of my Turkey Day blog. Baby sisters saying that older brothers are full of "Bull." Now is that respectful of aged siblings ... or whut? Besides, don't creative license count for nothin ? :)

And here are a couple of fotos of a young married couple.
The bloom of youth. Hopes springs eternal. etc.
Just kids ...
The one on the right looks like you could just stick them on top of a wedding cake.

Yikes! Brrrrrrrrrrr ...

Instead of "Black Friday" ...
It looks like today is "Blue" Friday.
Brrrrrrr.

Here are a few representative temperatures around the country ...

A bit on the cold side of things. However, I checked and our tomato plants haven't wilted from being frozen. Even have 2 green tomatoes on the vines and some blossoms. Recovering nicely from the excess food yesterday. Wife is stripping the turkey carcass and going to make great gravy & leftovers.

Turkey Morning

Early this morning my wife sent me out the door into the cold bitter blowing snow ... to climb the icy hill to the store ... all because she wanted 2 cans of green beans (had to have them, she said). With frost-bitten nose, fingers, and toes ... I have wrapped myself around the bunk heater ... in hopes that I will thaw out before it really becomes winter ... or until she sends me out again to get something else that she forgot and desperately needs for Thanksgiving.

I forgot to mention that she sent me out with a shovel and a pick to break thru the frozen ground and dig up potatoes for this annual feast. So far we are only committed to attend and eat
two BIG meals today ... :)

I'm a pretend therapist ... stuck my foto on this ID card.
What do you think? Is it possible ... or likely?
Hah! :)

Assembly of God Church parking lot

Today at the Assembly of God Church ... just around the corner, They are holding a car show. Cars are still showing up but I have to go other places. So here's a few fotos.

This is a slightly modified Honda Civic hatchback.

The Datsun Z-280 is a dirt racer and has Nitrous-Oxide injected.

A nice Corvette with a shot of it's engine.

And you could hear this Firebird rumble as it rolled up the street.

There's also an IROC Camaro and a midget race car.
more on the way.

Little Mercedes Benz

We had to go up to the V.A. Hospital for an appointment ...

So we decided to go over to the Mercedes Benz dealership and dream ... when you can't afford anything there ... about all you CAN do is dream. Anyway, there was this cute little car there (made by Mercedes) and I just had to take a foto of it for you. :-)

that my wife has made in 45 years.
She made it at Relief Society this evening.
She is so Jazzed about it!
I think she did good.

Handwriting Fun!

After analyzing daughter's handwriting yesterday evening ...
She decided to have fun with a few of her friends and associates.

This is a really great party trick ...
They met at Applebee's this evening after class for snacks.
Daughter then had me come, have them do handwriting samples,
and after they were all done ... I gave a brief analysis of their handwriting and what it told about them. They got a little freaky when I mentioned an old injury on the lower right side that was showing up in one guy's handwriting. And then he explained it to them.
FUN!

In Memory

For years, the "Peanut Man" sold boiled peanuts on this corner of what had been a gas station. A bank bought the lot and cleared it. But the city required in the building permit that they make provision for the "Peanut Man" to continue selling his boiled peanuts. Unfortunately he passed away before construction started on the site.

So in memory they erected this "peanut" image of him.
The can quotes him,
"Have a good day and let he Lord ride with you."

Some people doing small things ...
leave behind large images.

Honoring Veterans & Active Military

They are serving free entree's to all active duty military and veterans showing proof of service. We showed our VA ID cards. Wife had Oriental Chicken Salad (southern style = fried chicken & coleslaw in the salad). I had the Fiesta-Lime Chicken with rice and tortilla strips. It was delicious. Then we paid for 2 small dessert shooters and tipped the waitress. Fantastic meal, great price, really good food. We'll be back again!

Thx 2 JaNae

JaNae and her family kindly invited us out to dinner on Friday evening (we were just sitting around the house cooking up a thin-crust pizza ... which we abandoned as soon as we took it out of the oven). We all went to Ryan's Restaurant --> BUFFET!! I chose to eat white fish, popcorn shrimp, fried okra, onion rings, crab salad, and broccoli salad. With water and lemon juice to drink. WONDERFUL!! (and way too much to eat -- of course) Oh. Oh. I forgot the chocolate vanilla twist ice cream for desert. Our thanks to her and her family for their kindness. It was a lovely evening.

Today we were fasting ... and by afternoon I had this headache. So we lay down for a nap this afternoon. I got up with STILL HAVING A HEADACHE. I took my blood pressure --> 101/72 pulse of 72. That sounds like WAY too low. How did my body do that? Fat people don't usually have that kind of low blood pressure ... do they??? I decided to self-medicate by eating some corn chips. Hah!

Captain D's for Dinner

Along with JaNae, we had fried fish for dinner tonight.

And a side-order of fried pickles with ranch dressing.

Drove a school bus to pickup kids and take them home again. (After they spent the day in school.) My MIG welder ran out of flux core wire ... I've only been using that 10 lb. roll for 2-1/2 years. Why did it have to run out now ... right in the middle of another bicycle project? Those darn rolls cost $40 a piece at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Oh well, time to go read Fern Michaels or Todd McCaffrey.

Litter

What we have here is -- litter.
It is all over the ground ... it covers the grass, it covers the driveway, I hear it bounce off roofs and cars. I am not talking about the leaves ... I am talking about the plague of pecan nuts. You can't walk or drive without hearing them go "crunch!"

Along with the pecans come squirrels, blue jays, mockingbirds, doves, and cardinals. The crows have such a wide range of choice of eats, that they don't even bother coming around here.

I've filled up box after box of these ... can you imagine the idea of bending over and picking them up one-by-one? Neither can I ... so I use a little spring thing at the end of a pole to pick them up with (without bending over).

I must admit, they shell-out fairly easily and taste really good !!
see ya! :)

A Little Ribs

Today we were downwind of the First Assembly of God church
And this great big BBQ smoker that this fellow made.
They were cooking ribs and Boston Butt.

Notice he is standing on a platform about wheel-top level.

Ooh! Ooh! Those are ribs he is pulling out !!!

Talk about absolutely delicious!
Lunch today was soooo yummy!
Lots of paper towels required ...
finger-lickin' good.

Wear & Tear

See the hole worn thru in the heel area?
I had noticed that the soles were feeling a bit thin ...

The tops are still perfectly fine ... a little wear in the heel area.
It's disgusting that they are ONLY 4 or 5 years old.
I hoped they would have lasted longer.
For the price you pay, you'd expect a good pair of shoes to last longer, wouldn't you?
And it's not likely that I can get them re-soled.

I'm so disappointed that I'll just have to go and buy another pair of Teva shoes to replace them.
:-)
