Back to hobbies ... and Life

Finally got a decent photo of our black pug. He's a beut! He has to think about things alot before dealing with them. He has to sniff and sniff and sniff on a spot and think about what it all means. While the boston terrier would just take a quick sniff and head out looking for things to eat or things to chase. The collar he wears has lots of spikes on it ... just to keep Sheba from chewing on it or using it to pull him around.

Land along the Road

This is the only land that is along the roadway.
This foto is taken fron near the north boundary.
I assume the barbwire fence in the back is the eastern boundary.

This is looking east along the northern boundary.

This is near the southern boundary looking NE.
The horses belong to whoever is renting the pasture.
you will notice the it is reverting to sage brush.

This is looking NE from the south boundary.

Friend Visit ... along the way

We stopped and visited with Daniel as we headed west.
We really couldn't stay the night.  Had to get to Grand Island, NE.
It was really good to see him and chat a bit.
Even got to look in the "man cave" in the basement.

The little blue pickup truck died - not to be resurrected.
So this is Dan's current transportation.

This is the front porch of the house.

This is the primary entrance. - on the side of the house.

This is in the middle of the garage door!

Gravel Pit

Out along that far fenceline where the long white building resides,
The Singletons are going to create a commercial gravel pit.
Joe declined access through Oliver's & Royal's property.  So the Singletons will have to pay to make their own 40T bridge across the canal to run their big gravel trucks in and out.

I loved watching the grasses wave in the canal.

Don't Eat Here!

In addition to the high-flying rolls, Lambert's is also well-known for its "pass-arounds" -- fried okra, fried potatoes and other Southern delicacies that staff bring to diners for free. The cafes are also noted for generous portions and down-home hospitality. Servers always wear bow ties and suspenders -- a nod to Norman Lambert's personal style.

The cafe's "home cookin'" or comfort food is uniquely southern Missourian. The most popular items on the menu are the chicken fried roundsteak, fried chicken and chicken and dumplings. It's probably not the most healthful food, but it's warm and hearty, and diners can always get back on their diets tomorrow.
The Lambert family's Aunt Ruby was to have said if you leave Lambert's hungry, "it's your own (darn) fault."

My wife ordered roast beef ... getting nearly a pound (lb.) of it along with 2 veggie sides and I had the 1 lb. steak burger with mushrooms & fried onions with brown gravy along with coleslaw & turnip greens ... plus lots of fried okra and fried potatoes.  We were overloaded and had to take half of it home in a box.
We are still suffering from the after-effects of too much good food.
So we don't recommend that you go there.

They have locations in Sikeston, MO ... Ozark, MO ... and Foley, AL
(down by Gulf Shores -- in Baldwin County).
So you aren't likely to run into one of these too often.

A few photos

You have to watch out when your sisters cluster
and start talking ...
You never know if they are talking about you
or just ignoring you.

Pretty little temple we saw along the way.

Joe says "hello!"

From the land of nice cool summer weather.
It would be so nice to be a "snowbird"!

Heading West

We are running away from the kids ... and from humidity.

After much deliberation, we decided to take a more northerly route out west.  So, we ended the day in St. Louis.  Only about 722 miles of driving.  Maybe we will camp in Grand Isle, Nebraska tonight  Not sure if we are looking forward to the whole erect the tent thing ...

I mailed all my paperwork updates in for my job before we left yesterday morning.  Then off we went, after I changed my cargo shorts.  They got dirty crawling around on top the van putting on the cargo pod.  Now I am being banished to the shower.  gotta go.  see ya!

Heat Exhaustion -- Almost, maybe, ummm yeah.

I have several clients that like to take bicycle rides.
I caught up with one at 11:00 a.m. today
Outside air temp. was 96+ with lots of humidity.
We road what he thought was a couple of miles ...
Up and down hills with very little shade.
By the time we turned around I wasn't feeling well.
My tummy wasn't doing well.  Dizziness and that spaced out feeling.  Absolutely hot and sweating.  On the way back we stopped to rest several times in what little shade we could find.  I wanted to lay down, but didn't dare do so.  We walked up several steep hill slopes.
The whole trip took us 2 hours.
When measured with the car ... we rode 5 miles out and 5 miles back.

Several bottles of water, a bottle of chocolate milk, and a large bottle of Powerade later ... I rested on the bench inside WalMart, with my head resting on the cart handle.  Then went out and rested in my car with it running and the A/C blowing on high.  After a couple hours I managed to make it almost home.  My wife was upset that it had taken me so long.  Then she looked at me and said, "Your face is washed out and kinda gray around the edges.  Don't do that again."

This is how I transport a bicycle in my car ...

"Chocolate" Cheesecake

My wife asked, "Which one would you like?"
I said, "I'll take the one with red on top."
"Which one are you going to have?" I asked.
She said, "I'll have the chocolate one."
"But that's not a chocolate one.  That's just plain cheesecake." I protested.
"Wanna bet?' she asked.

She made a quick trip to the refrigerator ...

chocolate cheesecake ...
